Headword: *nw=tos
Adler number: nu,569
Translated headword: back
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the loins of a human being.[1]
There is a saying: "to carry off the majority of the Avars into their backs".[2]
Greek Original:
*nw=tos: h( yoi/a tou= a)nqrw/pou. to\ dh\ lego/menon, to\ plh=qos tw=n *)aba/rwn ei)s ta\ nw=ta perisu/resqai.
Notes:
[1] Same glossing in the Ambrosian Lexicon (according to Adler), and cf. ps.-Zonaras nu1411.
[2] For the Avars see under alpha 18. (Note, however, that ms V here reads not *)Aba/rwn but barba/rwn.) The meaning of the 'saying', not otherwise attested, is unclear. The headword exists in two forms, nw=tos masculine and nw=ton neuter. Here the headword is in the masculine form but the word in the saying is neuter plural; this may be further evidence that the passage is corrupt.
