Headword: Νότιος
Adler number: nu,508
Translated headword: damp
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] moist.[1]
Also [sc. attested is the phrase] νότιος ἱδρώς ["damp sweat"], [meaning] moist.[2]
The Etymologicum Magnum, in which it is transmitted that νῶτα ["backs"] or ψύαν ["loin-muscle"] or ψυ- [...] or ψ- [...] with a diphthong, ψόα with a single ο where instead of ῥῶα [sc. there is] ῥόα , [sc. and likewise not] χρῶα [but] χρόα , since, he says, into this part the sweat flows; he wants, needless to say, the sense "that down the back" [...]; thus "notios sweat was pouring down him"; the etymologist is also saying that out of the [noun] νοτίς ["dampness"], by lengthening of the omicron into omega, come both ὁ νῶτος and τὰ νῶτα .[3]
cf, nu 506.
[1] Likewise in other lexica: references at Photius nu268 Theodoridis; and see further, next note.
[2] Homer, Iliad 11.811: κατὰ δὲ νότιος ῥέεν ἱδρώς (quoted later in the entry); cf. the scholia there.
[3] Adler's note here says 'cf. Etym.Magn. 607.46', but the comparison is tangential. In the Suda this section of the entry is a marginal addition, 'miserably corrupted' (Adler), in ms M. The present translation of it translates the on-line text, which incorporates changes proffered by Adler in her consolidated addenda and corrigenda.
