A particular official position among [the] Athenians, different from [that of] the thesmothetai, used to be called this; their job was to compel the [sc. other] officials to abide by the laws.
Abridged from Harpokration s.v., where Dinarchus (frs. VI.12 and XIV.3 Conomis) and Philochorus (FGrH 328 F64) are cited. Philochorus apparently claims that they were creations of Ephialtes, in 462/1, but otherwise they are not attested until the last quarter of the C4.
