Nireus is mentioned in Homer, Iliad 2.673 as "a most beautiful man" (web address 1). The noun neireu/s is unattested outside philology (the grammarians cited, and scholia to Oppian, Halieutica 1.315); cf. nhri/ths at nu 336. On Nereus the sea-god see already nu 328.
