Notes:
Three nouns that sounded identical in Byzantine Greek. They are already compared in Tryphon I, περὶ τρόπων p. 203 Spengel, and Herodian, Partitions p. 189, p. 263 Boissonade.
Nireus is mentioned in Homer, Iliad 2.673 as "a most beautiful man" (web address 1). The noun νειρεύς is unattested outside philology (the grammarians cited, and scholia to Oppian, Halieutica 1.315). On Nereus the sea-god see already nu 328.
