This [is] an Assyrian city, founded by Ninos, the husband of Semiramis, in Atouria.[1] The ethnikon [is] Ninian. This is used in Herodotus, in the phrase "at the so-called Gates of [the] Ninians".[2]
OCD4 Nineveh(1). Another spelling of the city-name at nu 415.
[1] The entry takes over "Atouria" from Stephanus of Byzantium s.v.; one of the mss of Steph. has "Assyria", but Atouria is more precise (see Strabo 16.1.1-3).
