Headword: Νικόστρατος
Adler number: nu,405
Translated headword: Nikostratos, Nicostratus
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Comic poet. Athenaeus in [book] 2 of Deipnosophists mentions him: he says that his plays are Pandaros (also called Antyllos, and also apparently by Philetaerus),[1] Hierophant and Kleine; plus Habra and Hesiod and Diabolos and Anterosa and Hekate, Mageiros, Otes,[2] Ploutos, Syros, Apelaunomenos, Pseudistigmatias and Tokistes. These I found (?)lying on deposit.
And [there is] a proverb: "me, I will do everything Nicostratus' way." This man was an actor in comedies, who seemed to play his parts to perfection.[3]
Notes:
See Athenaeus, Deipnosophists 2.65D [2.71 Kaibel], 3.108C [3.71], 3.110A [3.74], 3.111C [3.76], 4.133C [4.10], 6.247E [6.52], 7.301B [7.60], 11.474B [11.48], 11.487B [11.73], 11.499B [11.100], 12.517A [12.12], 14.615F [14.5], 14.664B [14.85], 15.685C [15.33], 15.685E [15.33]. However, there were at least two comic poets of this name, one in Middle Comedy and one in New (see OCD4 s.v. nos.1 and 2; Kassel-Austin, PCG 7.74-92 and 93, and cf. 94 for [Ni]kostratos III); though no.1 is probably meant, he may have been credited with some of no.2's titles.
[1] cf. phi 308.
[2] Adler reports that mss GM have Otis (Bustard). Bernhardy drew attention to Athenaeus, Deipnosophists 15,700B [15.59 Kaibel], which quotes from a play by N. called Patriotai (Fellow-Countrymen).
[3] Quoted from epsilon 155.
