Headword: *ne/rteros
Adler number: nu,255
Translated headword: nether
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] lower.[1]
The full [form is] e)ne/rteros and by aphaeresis[2] ne/rteros. Similarly e)/nerqen [gives] ne/rqen.[3] Thus also from e)s ko/rakas ["to the crows"][is formed the verb] skoraki/zein ["to bid (someone) go to the crows"].[4]
Greek Original:
*ne/rteros: katw/teros. to\ e)ntele\s e)ne/rteros kai\ a)faire/sei ne/rteros. o(moi/ws to\ e)/nerqen, ne/rqen: ou(/tw kai\ e)k tou= e)s ko/rakas to\ skoraki/zein.
Notes:
[1] Similarly already in Hesychius nu377, probably (as Adler notes, though Latte is silent) generated by Homer, Iliad 15.225, where some manuscripts read ne/rteroi (Zenodotus says ne/rtatoi or e)ne/rtatoi). Cf. epsilon 1258. According to Chantraine s.v. e)/nerqe, the forms with ner- have parallels in other Indo-european languages, while the forms with e)ner- occur only in Greek.
The rest of the entry is lacking in mss AFV (in the margin of M), and Adler indicates it as an interpolation.
[2] Removal of a letter, in this instance the initial one (cf. e.g. omicron 649, and see LSJ s.v. a)fai/resis, II.2).
[3] cf. epsilon 1255.
[4] cf. sigma 666.
