Headword: Νέρτερος
Adler number: nu,255
Translated headword: nether
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] lower.[1]
The full [form is] ἐνέρτερος and by aphaeresis[2] νέρτερος . Similarly ἔνερθεν [gives] νέρθεν .[3] Thus also from ἐς κόρακας ["to the crows"][is formed the verb] σκορακίζειν ["to bid (someone) go to the crows"].[4]
Greek Original:
Νέρτερος: κατώτερος. τὸ ἐντελὲς ἐνέρτερος καὶ ἀφαιρέσει νέρτερος. ὁμοίως τὸ ἔνερθεν, νέρθεν: οὕτω καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ἐς κόρακας τὸ σκορακίζειν.
[1] Similarly already in Hesychius nu377, probably (as Adler notes, though Latte is silent) generated by Homer, Iliad 15.225, where some manuscripts read νέρτεροι (Zenodotus says νέρτατοι or ἐνέρτατοι ). Cf. epsilon 1258. According to Chantraine s.v. ἔνερθε , the forms with νερ- have parallels in other Indo-european languages, while the forms with ἐνερ- occur only in Greek.
The rest of the entry is lacking in mss AFV (in the margin of M), and Adler indicates it as an interpolation.
[2] Removal of a letter, in this instance the initial one (cf. e.g. omicron 649, and see LSJ s.v. ἀφαίρεσις , II.2).
[3] cf. epsilon 1255.
[4] cf. sigma 666.
