Headword: Νεοχμώσαντες
Adler number: nu,224
Translated headword: having innovated
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] they having moved recently. Herodotus [sc. uses this idiom].
Greek Original:
Νεοχμώσαντες: νεωστὶ κινήσαντες. Ἡρόδοτος.
The headword is aorist infinitive, masculine nominative plural, of the verb νεοχμόω (for which cf. nu 223, nu 225). It has evidently been quoted from somewhere, probably [DW] Cassius Dio 71.17.1. No such form occurs in the transmitted text of Herodotus. Nevertheless the reason he is cited here is because the aorist infinitive νεοχμῶσαι occurs in Herodotus 5.19.1, and both that and the present infinitive νεοχμοῦν in 4.201.2 (web address 1 and web address 2 below) are used in the sense of hostile action/innovation "against" (kata) an adversary; hence the present gloss "having moved recently [sc. against]", which is a version of what the ancient glosses on Herodotus 5.19.1 have (νεοχμῶσαι: νεωστὶ κινῆσαι ).
