Adler number: nu,193
Translated headword: more thieving than Neokleides; more thieving than Neoclides
Vetting Status: high

This man is the butt of comedy, because he was an orator and blind and a blackmailer and a thief. Aristophanes [writes]: "Neokleides, who, though blind, outdoes in stealing those who can see".
Greek Original:
*neoklei/dou klepti/steros: ou(=tos kekwmw/|dhtai, w(s r(h/twr h)=n kai\ tuflo\s kai\ sukofa/nths kai\ kle/pths. *)aristofa/nhs: *neoklei/dhs, o(/s e)sti me\n tuflo/s, kle/ptwn de\ tou\s ble/pontas u(perhko/ntise.
Notes:
Aristophanes, Plutus [Wealth] 665-6 (web address 1), with comment from the scholia there. The source of the headword phrase itself -- proverbial in Apostolius 11.99 -- is unidentifiable. The comparative klepti/steros occurs only in lexica and grammarians, but Aristophanes uses (and perhaps coined) the superlative klepti/statos at Plutus 27.
For Neokleides and his affliction cf. Ecclesiazusae 254 and 398ff; R. Garland, The Eye of the Beholder: deformity and disability in the Graeco-Roman World (London 1995) 32.
