Headword: Νεμήσεις ὑποκριτῶν
Adler number: nu,170
Translated headword: allocations of actors
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
The poets used to take three actors allocated by lot to act in their plays; of these [actors] the victorious one is automatically[1] invited for the following year. So [the process] is like distributions.
Notes:
Photius nu113 Theodoridis and (under νέμησις ὑποκριτῶν ) Hesychius nu286 also have this entry.
Some of its vagueness is dispelled in DFA [see bibliography below] 93. The context is tragedy at the Athenian City Dionysia, and each of the three competing playwrights gets his protagonist (which is what this phraseology means) at random.
[1] Literally, without judgment.
