[Meaning] he[1] [who is] in Nemea.[2]
[sc. Pertaining] to the Lokrian [sc. city of that name] evidently. For the citizen of the Nemea in Elis [sic] is on record as 'Nemeos' and 'Nemeaios', but already also Νεμεήτης ; as a clear [product] of Zeus Νεμεήτης .[3]
Greek Original:
Νέμειος: ὁ ἐν τῇ Νεμέᾳ. τῇ Λοκρικῇ δηλαδή. ὁ γὰρ τῆς κατὰ τὴν Ἦλιν Νεμέας πολίτης Νέμεος ἀναγράφεται καὶ Νεμεαῖος, ἤδη δὲ καὶ Νεμεήτης: ὡς δῆλον ἐκ τοῦ Ζεὺς Νεμεήτης.
Notes:
[1] Or at any rate something masculine in gender; see further, next note.
[2] This headword, Nemeios, is attested in a range of writers which includes Euripides and Thucydides; and despite the supplementary part of the present entry, what they all mean by it is someone or something (e.g. the mythological lion) from Nemea in the NE Peloponnese (nu 149, nu 150, etc.).
[3] This material derives from Stephanus of Byzantium s.v. Nemea, who adds to his material on Peloponnesian Nemea the statement that there was another Nemea (otherwise unattested) in Lokris, with this ethnikon.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; geography; religion
