An incompetent summary of Arrian, Anabasis 6.2.3. Arrian begins there by talking about the Cretan-born Nearchos, whom Alexander did appoint his admiral in 326 BCE (see generally OCD4 Nearchus); but the helmsman who pretended to be admiral, as Arrian makes clear (both here and again at 7.5.6), was Onesikritos of Astypalaia (see omicron 351).
