Headword: *ne/ai
Adler number: nu,103
Translated headword: Neai
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
An island near Lemnos ([sc. named] from the [verb] ne/w, [meaning] I dive/swim),[1] to which, they say, Heracles swam. According to some, Philoctetes was bitten by a water-snake there.[2] But Nea [is] a Mysian fortress.[3] [Its][4] ethnikon [is] Neaios.
Greek Original:
*ne/ai: nh=sos plhsi/on *lh/mnou [para\ to\ ne/w, to\ kolumbw=], h(=| prosenh/cato, fasi/n, *(hraklh=s. peri\ h(\n kata/ tinas *filokth/ths e)dh/xqh u(po\ u(/drou. *ne/a de\ frou/rion *musi/as. e)qniko\n *neai=os.
Notes:
Apart from the parenthetical (interpolated) ne/w etymology, this entry derives from Stephanus of Byzantium s.v.
Neai is too small to feature in the Barrington Atlas, but for Lemnos (lambda 448, lambda 449, lambda 450, lambda 451, lambda 452, lambda 453) see map 56 grid A1-2.
[1] cf. nu 226, nu 336, nu 338, nu 527.
[2] For Philoctetes see generally phi 383.
[3] Again, not in the Barrington Atlas, and anyway hard to identify (unless it is the Nea village mentioned by Strabo 12.2.23, who describes it as being near Skepsis, i.e. in the Troad).
[4] In Stephanus it is made clear that this refers to Neai, not Nea.
