Headword: *metai/xmion
Adler number: mu,752
Translated headword: no man's land
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning the terrain] between two phalanxes of the war [= battle].
Greek Original:
*metai/xmion: metacu\ du/o fala/ggwn tou= pole/mou.
Note:
A clumsy gloss (also in the Synagoge, and Photius mu313 Theodoridis), but the essence of the word -- literally, between-spears -- is clear enough: see LSJ s.v. (web address 1). It appears to be a word used by un-military historians (Herodotus 6.77 and 112) and poets rather than any kind of technical term.
