Headword: Μετάφερε σαυτόν
Adler number: mu,742
Translated headword: change yourself
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. The injunction/proverb arises] because men ought to change themselves and take their affairs in hand.
Greek Original:
Μετάφερε σαυτόν. ὅτι προσήκει ἑαυτοὺς μεταφέρειν καὶ μεταχειρίζεσθαι τὰ πράγματα.
Note:
The headword phrase -- in the imperative mode, and perhaps modelled on the famous Delphic maxim "know yourself" (gamma 333, gamma 334) -- looks proverbial but is not attested as such. The closest extant parallel for it occurs in Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 8.41.1: πάντα δὴ ταῦτα ἐπὶ σεαυτὸν μετάφερε "change all these things toward yourself".
