Headword: Μεταμαθεῖν
Adler number: mu,707
Translated headword: to relearn, to unlearn
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] to repent.[1]
To cease.
Agathias [writes]: "you who had sworn have violated the treaties without constraint. But if even now you were to be willing to relearn what is advantageous, you will have nothing less [sc. than you had before]."[2]
Properly they used to call "relearning" [the process of] learning something else afterwards, abandoning the first [knowledge]. Aristophanes in Wealth [writes]: "might you not relearn? Might you not give me Wealth himself and the silphium of Battus?"[3]
"And, [sc. despite] being a Hebrew, he repented of the impiety of the Assyrians". [4] Meaning he changed.
[1] Likewise or similarly in other lexica: see the references at Photius mu322 Theodoridis. The headword is aorist infinitive of μεταμανθάνω . It is presumably quoted from somewhere, though not necessarily from the Agathias quotation given below (which the other lexica do not have).
[2] Agathias, Histories 1.13.
[3] Aristophanes, Wealth [Plutus] 924, with scholion. For 'the silphium of Battus' cf. beta 186, beta 187.
[4] Quotation (and individual) unidentifiable.
Keywords: biography; botany; comedy; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; ethics; food; geography; historiography; history; religion
