Headword: *meta/boloi
Adler number: mu,682
Translated headword: retailers
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] agents, re-sellers.
Greek Original:
*meta/boloi: pragmateutai/, metapra/tai.
Notes:
= Synagoge; Photius Lexicon mu308 Theodoridis; cf. Hesychius mu970, Etymologicum Gudianum (with order of glosses reversed); and cf. kappa 336. Perhaps from commentary on Isaiah 23:2 or 23:3 LXX, where the headword (nominative plural) occurs. It is found accented in two ways: meta/boloi, as here, and also metabo/loi.
The first definition given in LSJ, 'hucksters' (web address 1), has a negative connotation in modern English that is not usually appropriate for the Greek, particularly in its many epigraphic attestations (see LSJ for citations).
