Adler number: mu,659
Translated headword: Mesene, Messene
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A name of a city. Also [sc. attested is] Mesenian, [meaning someone] from Mesene.
Greek Original:
*mesh/nh: o)/noma po/lews. kai\ *mesh/nios, o( a)po\ th=s *mesh/nhs.
Note:
The city intended was probably Messene (as indeed ms V has it), on the slopes of Mt. Ithome in Messenia, SW Greece (Barrington Atlas map 58 grid B3). There was another Mesene usually spelled with a single sigma, but this was a district (not city) of Mesopotamia, around Ktesiphon/Seleukeia. See Pliny 6.129 & 131.
