Headword: Μαθών
Adler number: mu,45
Translated headword: having learned
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning he] having seen.[1] "Having learned [this], the Celt laughed and mocked, as if he were a man about to do combat with a boy."[2]
And elsewhere: "as [he/she] learned that he also was standing up".[3] Meaning [he/she] saw [this].
And Aristophanes [writes]: "for one might learn something wise even from his enemies."[4]
[1] The headword, presumably extracted from the first quotation given, is aorist participle of μανθάνω , masculine nominative singular.
[2] Quotation unidentifiable. (Adler flags up kappa 1307 while asserting that the present material is not from John of Antioch. Perhaps more exactly, it does not seem to be part of his fr.49 FHG, now Roberto.)
[3] Callimachus, Hecale fr. 257 Pfeiffer.
[4] A possible version -- for others see Dunbar's edition ad loc. -- of Aristophanes, Birds 382, where this gnomic statement occurs.
