Headword: Μεγαίνετος
Adler number: mu,394
Translated headword: Megainetos, Megaenetus
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A proper name. A stubborn man, and one of the would-be generals,[1] and rash in other respects.
Greek Original:
Μεγαίνετος: ὄνομα κύριον. αὐθάδης, καὶ τῶν στρατηγιώντων, καὶ ἄλλως θρασύς.
Notes:
From the scholia to Aristophanes, Frogs 965, where he is mentioned. Cf. the next entry, mu 395, and see generally under gamma 352.
[1] For the verb στρατηγιᾶν see sigma 1169. There is no record of Megainetos ever having succeeded in being elected to the board of 10 generals in Athens (though our evidence in this area is admittedly lacunose), and indeed he is otherwise unattested. Cf. phi 606.
