Headword: Μεγαλώνυμον
Adler number: mu,373
Translated headword: having a great name
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] having great glory, famous, renowned.
Greek Original:
Μεγαλώνυμον: μεγαλόδοξον, περίφημον, ὀνομαστόν.
Same or similar entry in other lexica, beginning with Hesychius mu481 (who has just the first of the three synonyms): see the references at Photius mu169 Theodoridis. The headword is either masculine accusative singular or neuter nominative/accusative singular of this adjective; the former if, as it routinely assumed, it is extracted from Aristophanes, Clouds 569, where it is an epithet of Aither [alphaiota 121, alphaiota 122] in a choral lyric passage (web address 1). Latte's citation, at Hesychius s.v., of the masculine nominative singular in the Septuagint (Jeremiah 39.19) seems scarcely to the point.
