For the headword adjective cf. mu 295, but the present one (also in Photius mu149, and cf. under Hesychius mu419) takes a different line. Some lexicographer perhaps thought mau=ros was a dialectal variant of mwro/s, like trau=ma and Ionic trw=ma. The ethnic *mau=ros, Latin Maurus, may also have been confused with this adjective; cf. *maurou/sioi at mu 298, and Modern Greek.
