Headword: Μάντις
Adler number: mu,169
Translated headword: augur, mantis, seer
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Generically [sc. a priest], sacrificing priests in particular.[1]
[Note] that there is a locust slow to move and pale green, called a "mantis" [augur]; they divine auguries by noting its movements.[2]
Greek Original:
Μάντις, γενικῶς, θυοσκόοι ἱερῆες εἰδικῶς. ὅτι ἔστιν ἀκρὶς δυσκίνητος, χλωρά, καλουμένη μάντις, ἧστινος προσέχοντες ταῖς κινήσεσι μαντεύονται.
Notes:
[1] The allusion is to Homer, Iliad 24.221, where ἱερῆες occurs in the cited epic plural: "whether of seers that divine from sacrifice (μάντιες θυοσκόοι ) or of priests (ἱερῆες )". The lexicographer is attempting to set up an opposition between the two terms; cf. theta 591 (and mu 168 already for mantis).
[2] Repeated from alpha 3990 (q.v.).
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic; religion; zoology
