Headword: *muw/nwn
Adler number: mu,1426
Translated headword: muscles
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the sinewy parts. Procopius [writes][1]: "one of the Goths hitting [him] with a javelin struck through both of the muscles which are at the back of the lower legs,[2] [...] coming he dragged the corpse."[3]
Greek Original:
*muw/nwn: tw=n neurwdw=n to/pwn. *proko/pios: *go/tqwn de/ tis a)konti/w| balw/n, muw/nwn de\ oi(\ o)/pisqe/n ei)si tw=n knhmw=n e(kate/rwn, e)pituxw/n, e)rxo/menos to\n nekro\n ei(=lke.
Notes:
The headword is genitive plural of the noun muw/n. Though it occurs in the Procopius quotation given, it is more probably extracted here from Homer, Iliad 16.324; cf. the scholia there.
[1] Adapted from parts of Procopius, History of the Wars of Justinian 6.23.37 & 6.23.38 (web address 1); cf. Kaldellis (367).
[2] The selection obscures what is going on. A Moor, the omitted object in this sentence, was dragging off the corpse of a Goth, when another Goth pinned both of the Moor's legs together with a well-aimed shot.
[3] The subject here is the Moor whose legs have been pinned. Between these two sentences several words have been omitted and "coming" (e)rxo/menos) here reads "holding" (e)xo/menos) in Procopius.
