Adler number: mu,1073
Translated headword: hare-soup, jugged hare
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Properly a hare sausage[1] [sc. made] out of its intestines. They also use it of a pig. Alternatively some [sc. other kind of] way of preparing its guts, or intestines. But some [sc. say that it is] the soup prepared from the hare's blood and its innards.[2]
Greek Original:
Μιμάρης: κυρίως ἡ λαγῴα χορδὴ ἡ ἐκ τῶν ἐντέρων. χρῶνται δὲ καὶ ἐπὶ χοίρου. ἢ σκευασία τις τῆς κοιλίας, ἢ τῶν ἐντέρων. οἱ δὲ τὴν ἐκ τοῦ λαγῴου αἵματος καὶ τῶν ἐντοσθίων σκευαζομένην καρύκην.
Notes:
The substance of this entry comes from the scholia to Aristophanes, Acharnians 1112, where the noun μίμαρκυς occurs in the accusative case (web address 1). The Suda's μιμάρης , otherwise unattested, is therefore presumably a corruption of this.
[1] For the noun χορδή see chi 396 (with LSJ s.v. II on its applied culinary meanings).
[2] Compare the notorious Spartan black broth (zeta 136).
