Translated headword: bindweed color, bindweed colour
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[no gloss]
Greek Original:
*mi/linon xrw=ma.
Notes:
For this entry cf. ps.-Zonaras mu1362, though there -- in modern editions at least -- it is punctuated as headword plus gloss: 'milinon: a colo(u)r'. That the two words are, rather, a single phrase is suggested by their appearance as such in Eustathius, Commentary on Homer's Odyssey 2.148, lines 27-28.
The adjective milinos is unattested outside these three places, but Eustathius gives the connection with (s)milax (mu 1058, sigma 740); and modern reference-works on bindweed/convolvulus say that it can be used to yield a green dye.
For 'colo(u)r' see generally chi 538, chi 539.
Keywords: botany; dialects, grammar, and etymology; science and technology; trade and manufacture
