Headword: *miliarh/sion
Adler number: mu,1062
Translated headword: milliarense, small coin
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
The tenth part of the nomisma.
Greek Original:
*miliarh/sion. to\ tou= nomi/smatos de/katon.
Notes:
Same entry, according to Adler, in the Ambrosian Lexicon (789).
The neuter headword miliarh/sion is a transliteration of the Latin milliarense; it is also attested in the spelling miliari/sion. The glossing phrase -- in which nomisma appears to be a coin of a specific denomination (contrast nu 466) -- is lacking in mss AFV.
The headword is normally attested in the plural; this form, the nominative/accusative singular, is confined to lexicography.
There are various definitions of the value of the coin: Etymologicum Gudianum 294 defines it as "two denarii" as well as "ten ounces", and connects it (incorrectly?) to the Latin word miles ('soldier').
