Headword: Λύματα
Adler number: lambda,833
Translated headword: lumata
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] pledges/securities. As lusima ["redeemable things"] and lutrosima ["ransomable things"].
Greek Original:
Λύματα: ἐνέχυρα. οἷον λύσιμα καὶ λυτρώσιμα.
Notes:
Neuter plural(s).
LSJ s.v. λύμα B records this meaning of the word only for the Suda (as distinct from its normal meaning in lambda 834). As a verbal noun, it would be derived from λύω "loosen" rather than λυμαίνω "spoil". The same definition occurs in Photius lambda484, and Theodoridis connects it there to ἐνέχυρα λύσιμα "redeemable pledges" in Plato, Laws 820E. (The word occurs in Photius near to where, alphabetically, λύσιμα would occur, which might suggest it was originally a gloss on λύσιμα .)
