Headword: Λυδὸς ἐν μεσημβρίᾳ παίζει
Adler number: lambda,787
Translated headword: a Lydian is playing at noon
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. A proverbial phrase] in reference to licentious men; those being the times for licentious behaviour. For the Lydians are a comic target because they satisfy their genital urges with their own hands. This proverb [is] like the [one that goes] "a goatherd in the heat". Because at such times goatherds are licentious.
Notes:
(For Lydia see lambda 783.) The headword phrase comes from Attic comedy: Comica adespota fr. 720 Kock, now 944 K.-A.
cf. delta 89 (on "datism"), and see generally J. Henderson, The Maculate Muse (New Haven 1975) 220-1 #489.
