Headword: Λιμοδωριεῖς
Adler number: lambda,555
Translated headword: Famine-Dorians
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Those Peloponnesians who because of famine migrated into Rhodes and Knidos.
Greek Original:
Λιμοδωριεῖς: Πελοποννησίων οἱ διὰ λιμὸν μετοικήσαντες εἰς Ῥόδον καὶ Κνίδον.
Notes:
Same entry in Photius (lambda314 Theodoridis), and cf. more fully Hesychius lambda1041. The episode is undated, but presumably early.
Outside lexicography, the term is attested in e.g. a proverb-collection attributed to Plutarch (where only Rhodes, not Knidos, is mentioned) and in ps.-Scylax, Periplous 62 (a variant tradition naming Erineos, Boion and Kytinion, in Doris, central Greece).
