Translated headword: hod, flat pan
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
What in common dialect [sc. is the headword] laka/nh; from the intensive prefix la- and the [verb] xai/nein ['to gape open']; for [it is] flat; but the Attic form [is] leka/nh.
Greek Original:
*laka/nh: to\ me\n koino\n laka/nh: para\ to\ la e)pitatiko\n kai\ to\ xai/nein: platu\ ga/r: to\ de\ *)attiko\n leka/nh.
Notes:
From the scholia to Aristophanes, Birds 1143, where the Attic-dialect version of the headword appears: 'herons [carried the mortar] in hods'. Again at lambda 230.
Outside lexicography, the koine form of the word occurs once in the Septuagint (Judges 5.25). The Attic form occurs several times in Aristophanes: Birds 840 as well as 1143 (hod); Clouds 907 and Wasps 600 (pan). Contrary to the etymology proffered here, the term seems simply to be an expanded form of the Attic noun le/kos 'pan'.
Keywords: comedy; daily life; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; poetry; trade and manufacture
