Headword: *le/gw
Adler number: lambda,225
Translated headword: I say
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] I speak. It also means I measure and I lie down and I gather and I obtain.[1] From the future tense le/cw [comes] the present tense le/cw, hence le/ceto; and o)/rso, o)/rseo.[2]
*le/gw also [means] I build. And [sc. compare] diale/gousan, [meaning] building across. And diale/gousi, [meaning] they dig through. Thucydides.[3]
Greek Original:
*le/gw: to\ lalw=: shmai/nei de\ kai\ to\ metrw= kai\ to\ koimw=mai kai\ to\ sulle/gw kai\ to\ lagxa/nw. a)po\ ou)=n tou= le/cw me/llontos le/cw e)nestw/s, e)/nqen le/ceto: kai\ o)/rsw, o)/rseo. *le/gw kai\ to\ oi)kodomw=. kai\ diale/gousan, dioikodomou=san. kai\ diale/gousi, dioru/ttousi. *qoukudi/dhs.
Notes:
[1] All except "lie down" are senses of the same word (le/gw (B) in LSJ). "Lie down" (le/gw (A)) is a back-formation from le/comai, e)/lekto, etc., and should have the stem lex- (le/xetai is cited by Hesychius lambda761, and cf. lo/xos).
[2] The "future imperfect" le/ceto does not occur, but the imperative le/ceo does (Homer, Iliad 9.617, Odyssey 19.598). The imperatives le/co and le/ceo parallel o)/rso and o)/rseo, and would account for the mention of these latter here. For an attempted explanation of these forms, see Roth 60-76.
[3] See already delta 625, inc. the note there on this citation of 'Thucydides'.
