Adler number: lambda,180
Translated headword: I deceive
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] I cheat.
Greek Original:
*laika/zw: a)patw=.
Note:
On the headword verb see LSJ s.v. Sense I there, "wench" (i.e. fornicate), is well-attested in Attic comedy (e.g. Aristophanes, Knights 167; cf. lambda 181, and see generally J. Henderson, The Maculate Muse (New Haven 1975) 153 #213). LSJ's sense II, "deceive", is confined to grammarians and lexicographers. Besides the present instance see esp. ps.-Zonaras lambda p.1292 (ll.11-12), where it is etymologized fancifully that the same verb means 'go whoring' and 'deceive' because 'prostitutes, that is, whores, deceive'.
