Headword: *lau/reion
Adler number: lambda,154
Translated headword: Laureion, Laurium
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A place in Attica, making metal.
Greek Original:
*lau/reion: to/pos *)attikh=s, poiw=n me/tallon.
Notes:
cf. the scholia to Aristophanes, Knights 362 ('mines') and Birds 1106 ('Laureotic owls').
In classical usage the word me/tallon would be a mine (see e.g. at mu 704) -- in this instance a silver-mine; but as Laureion could hardly be said to "make" a mine, the later meaning of the word is appropriate here.
