The Lapiths were an ancient Thessalian 'clan' (so OCD(4) s.v.) celebrated in mythology for their battles with the Centaurs (see under theta 368). Lapithes, the present headword, was also a proper name in its own right: see e.g. Diodorus Siculus 4.68-69.
