[Meaning they] being hard-pressed.[1] "Being overtaken by the situation they were forced to await the naval attack."[2]
Greek Original:
*katataxou/menoi: katepeigo/menoi. katataxou/menoi de\ u(po\ tou= kairou= h)nagka/sqhsan u(pome/nein to\n e)pi/ploun.
Notes:
[1] The headword (presumably extracted from the quotation given) is present middle/passive participle of katataxe/w, masculine nominative plural; cf. kappa 811, kappa 812.
[2] Polybius fr. 170 Büttner-Wobst (context indeterminable). Büttner-Wobst notes (536) that Casaubon attributed this fragment to Polybius. Dindorf conjectured (ibid.) that tou= kairou= should be replaced by tw=n kairw=n (thus, by the circumstances). Also, Büttner-Wobst suggested that the fragment should read kathnagka/sqhsan: they were forced back (ibid.).
