Headword: Καλῶς
Adler number: kappa,260
Translated headword: well, cleverly
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning piously and humanely in Thucydides. "To perform this well/cleverly is a credit to them." That is, being a pirate. For neither used they to drive away a ploughing-ox or steal [it] by night, nor to practice piracy together with murders.
Note:
From the scholia to Thucydides 1.5.2, quoted here, where this adverb (again kappa 262) occurs. The sense of the explanation seems to be that humane piracy is a credit because it is done openly and without loss of life.
