[Meaning] narrow places [sc. providing shelter] against storms, and strongholds, and a place of refuge. Some say that the Cretans ruling the sea along with King Minos[1] fled from the islanders into certain caves. Hence those places were called κρησφύγετα .

Κρησφύγετα: τὰ πρὸς τοὺς χειμῶνας στενά, καὶ ὀχυρώματα, καὶ καταφυγή. οἱ δέ φασιν, ὅτι Κρηταιεῖς τοὺς νησιώτας ἅμα Μίνῳ τῷ βασιλεῖ θαλασσοκρατοῦντες ἔφυγον εἰς σπήλαιά τινα. ὅθεν ἐκεῖνα ὠνομάσθησαν κρησφύγετα.
