Headword: *kwma/somai
Adler number: kappa,2255
Translated headword: I will carouse
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] I will behave licentiously.[1] In the Epigrams: "for if you kill me, then I will stop; but if you let me live and bring upon me worse [sc. adversities] than these, I will carouse."[2]
Greek Original:
*kwma/somai: a)selgw=s diateqh/somai. e)n *)epigra/mmasi: h)\n ga/r me ktei/nh|s, to/te pau/somai: h)\n de/ m' a)fh=|s zh=n kai\ diaqh=|s tou/twn xei/rona, kwma/somai.
Notes:
[1] The headword -- future middle of kwma/zw, first person singular -- is presumably extracted from the quotation given. For this verb see also epsilon 548, kappa 2252, kappa 2254, kappa 2258.
[2] Greek Anthology 5.64.3-4 (Asclepiades); addressing Zeus, the poet asserts that even some very foul weather events will not thwart his erotic indulgences; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 47) and (vol. II, 124). Gow and Page note (vol. I, 47) that here the Anthologia Palatina transmits the aorist participle diaqei/s, thus perhaps reading: "having disposed of" (vol. II, 124). But they remark that this appears to be the wrong tense, that the presence of the conjunction kai/ attracts the participle to the second person singular aorist subjunctive a)fh=|s, and so they follow the Suda in reading diaqh=|s (ibid.).
