Headword: *koloktruw/n
Adler number: kappa,1943
Translated headword: koloktryƓn
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
It is a Persian breed similar to locusts.
Greek Original:
*koloktruw/n: ge/nos ti *persiko\n a)ttele/bois o(/moio/n e)sti.
Notes:
From the scholia to Aristophanes, Frogs 932; offered there as a variant reading of i(ppalektruw/n ("horse-rooster, gryphon", i.e. a monster). A noun koloktruw/n is also noted in Herodian (De Prosodia Catholica p. 22 Lentz, On The Declension of Nouns p. 724) and glossed by Hesychius kappa3367: "born from a maimed large rooster". All this is wasted ingenuity, however, because in Aristophanes the phrase to\n cou=qon i(ppalektruo/na (quoting Aeschylus fr. 134) is secure; cf. delta 1054, xi 81.
For locusts see alpha 4336.
