Headword: *knh/mh
Adler number: kappa,1865
Translated headword: shank, shin
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the curved part of the leg.
Greek Original:
*knh/mh: to\ koi=lon tou= ske/lous.
Note:
Comparable entry, according to Adler, in the Ambrosian Lexicon (1179), but not precisely paralleled elsewhere. ps.-Zonaras refers to the "roughness of the leg". Others appear to have identified this body-part with the calf (i)gnu/a) instead (Etymologicum Magnum "the back of the leg"; scholia to Aristophanes, Plutus [Wealth] 784), and there is confusion as to whether the a)ntiknh/mion is the shin or the calf. Identifying the knh/mh with the calf would explain why the Suda calls it curved.
