Adler number: kappa,1614
Translated headword: I will put on a Kimberine
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[This is] a kind of outer-garment, [named] after a place. Aristophanes [writes]: "I will put on a Kimberine".
Greek Original:
*kimbe/rinon e)ndu/somai: ei)=dos i(mati/ou, a)po\ to/pou. *)aristofa/nhs: kimbe/rinon e)ndu/somai.
Notes:
Aristophanes, Lysistrata 52, with comment from the scholia there.
There are three textual variants: *kimbe/rinon (as here), *kimberiko/n (preferred by most editors, cf. kappa 1738), and *kimmeriko/n.
The orthodox geographical link is with the Bosporan Kimmerioi (see kappa 1617) of the present-day Ukraine. (Given the required links with fifth-century Athens, a connection with the Cimbri of Jutland [see OCD(4) s.v. and kappa 1615] can be ruled out.)
Keywords: clothing; comedy; definition; geography
