Aristophanes [writes]: "and I would stand by the funnels".[1]

Κημός: πλέγμα κωνοειδές, δι' οὗ καθιᾶσιν οἱ δικασταὶ τὴν ψῆφον εἰς τὸν κάδον. Ἀριστοφάνης: κἀπισταίην ἐπὶ τοῖς κημοῖς. καὶ τὸ τοῖς ἵπποις ἐπιτιθέμενον, καὶ γυναικεῖον προκόσμημα, καὶ αἱ αὐλητικαὶ φορβειαί, καὶ κρίκου τι γένος, καὶ πόα τις, καὶ ὄσπριόν τι παρὰ Θρᾳξίν. ἐν Ἐπιγράμμασι: καὶ ἀμφίτρητον ὑπεικτὰν κημόν. καὶ μηχανικόν τι πυρφόρον μηχάνημα.

[4] Distortion of αὐλωτὸς φιμός , Aeschylus fr. 44.A.647 Mette, a muzzle with pipes attached: "who had four yoke-bearing colts, muzzled with piping muzzles". Defined as a κημός in Pausanias the Atticist Ἀττικῶν ὀνομάτων συναγωγή and Hesychius s.v. αὐλωτοὶ φιμοί : "piping muzzles: muzzles [κημοί ]; because bells are attached to the muzzles, and when the horses blow into them, they produced a sound like a trumpet."
