Headword: Κειρία
Adler number: kappa,1480
Translated headword: swathing-band
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] wrapping with swathing clothes.
Greek Original:
Κειρία: ἡ σπαργάνωσις.
Note:
LSJ s.v. II: "swathing band, bandage", as opposed to "bedstead-band" (on which see kappa 1479). As LSJ records it, this usage is late, found in papyri, Soranus, and Hesychius (although the instance of κηρείαις in Hesychius cited actually glosses κειρίαις in John 11:44, "grave clothes" -- a related sense conflated in LSJ, but not associated with babies). No other lexicon gives this sense: they either refer to Aristophanes' bedstead-bands, as in kappa 1479, or the grave clothes of the New Testament.
