Headword: *ke/nsai
Adler number: kappa,1329
Translated headword: to spur on
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to berate.
Greek Original:
*ke/nsai: e)piplh=cai.
Note:
The headword is quoted from Homer, Iliad 23.337. Verb form (from kente/w: kappa 1336) frequently glossed, including Hesychius kappa2222, the Lexicon Artis Grammaticae, the Etymologicum Magnum, and the Homeric scholia ad loc. The Suda's gloss is unique, however, and apparently arises from confusion over the D scholion on the Homeric passage, "to spur on, shouting" (ke/nsai o(moklh/sas): "strike (plh=con) with a spur, and berating (e)piplh/cas) with voice". The Suda has used the gloss of "shouting" instead of the gloss of "spur on".
