Headword: *kema/s
Adler number: kappa,1310
Translated headword: fawn, pricket
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[ke/mas, genitive] kema/dos.
[Meaning] a stag, one sleeping [koimw/menos] in a grotto; being a kind of koimas.[1]
"If, mistress, you drag Damis out of the sea and out of poverty, he will sacrifice a gold-horned fawn".[2]
Greek Original:
*kema/s, kema/dos. e)/lafos, o( koimw/menos e)n sphlai/w|: koima/s tis w)/n. ei) d' w(s e)k pela/gous e)rru/sao *da=min, a)/nassa, kh)k peni/hs, qu/se xruso/kerwn kema/da.
Notes:
LSJ s.v. notes the precision of Aristophanes of Byzantium's definition: a kemas is older than a nebros (nu 126) but younger than an elaphos.
[1] cf. the scholia to Homer, Iliad 10.361, where the headword occurs in the accusative case. The scholiast implausibly derives kema/s from a hypothetical noun related to the verb koima/w. According to LSJ s.v., kema/s may be cognate with English "hind".
[2] Greek Anthology 6.231.7-8 (Philip), reading qu/sei for the Suda's qu/se. On this epigram, wherein a poor sailor sacrifices and prays to an unnamed Egyptian goddess, see Gow and Page (vol. I, 310-313); (vol. II, 344-345); and its further excerpts at alpha 4223, epsilon 1499, kappa 1222, lambda 13, mu 447, and psi 31. On the identity of the goddess, see epsilon 1499 note. As Gow and Page note (vol. II, 344), the horns of sacrificial animals were often gilded; cf. Plato Alcibiades 2.149c (web address 1).
