Headword: Καυχᾷ
Adler number: kappa,1145
Translated headword: you boast
Vetting Status: high
The other [sc. Attic] orators use αὐχεῖν for this same sense;[1] but Lycurgus in the [speech] On the Oracles employed the word [sc. in question here]. "In a democracy you[1] must say other things; but one is not open to you - for you championed it/him badly;[3] and the things you boast about, others are ashamed of."[4]
For this verb see also kappa 1146 (and under alpha 99, alpha 3123, etc.).
[1] cf. alpha 4541, alpha 4546 (and alpha 4542).
[2] This is singular 'you'; someone specific is being addressed.
[3] This part of the quotation is corrupt (as Bernhardy realized), and the meaning is lost.
[4] Lycurgus fr.81 Conomis.
