Headword: Καυνάκης
Adler number: kappa,1137
Translated headword: kaunakes, mantle
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
The contest;[1] or a kind of cloak, which they also call a Persis. But others [consider it a] "Thymaitian blanket", which is "like a sagma of Morychos". A sagma [is] a receptacle for [soldiers'] gear.
Notes:
An entry which combines quoted phrases from Aristophanes, Wasps 1138 and 1142 (web address 1) with comment from the scholia there. The jokes are expertly unravelled by MacDowell 278-9. The main point is that, in the dialogue summarized here, a kaunakes/Persis (cf. gamma 74) is far more luxurious than the other items mentioned.
[1] This initial gloss makes no obvious sense.
