Headword: *kaulw=
Adler number: kappa,1135
Translated headword: I form a shoot, I form a stalk
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[I form a shoot/stalk], [future] I will form a shoot/stalk.[1]
[sc. Also attested is] e)kkekaulhko/ta ["having put out a shoot/stalk"]:[2] "all of the [parts of the] vegetables that have put out a shoot/stalk".[3]
Greek Original:
*kaulw=: kaulh/sw. *)ekkekaulhko/ta: tw=n laxa/nwn pa/nta e)kkekaulhko/ta.
Notes:
[1] The verb kaule/w is cited in its present and future tense. The simple verb is attested only in this passage (LSJ s.v.), and the lexicographer is using it to introduce the classical verb e)kkaule/w. (The verb is also used to form proskaule/w "I shoot out like a stalk", in Hippocrates, diakaule/w "I run to stalk" in Theophrastus, and e)gkaule/w "I am in stalk" in Aristotle.)
[2] The compound verb e)kkaule/w "I run to stalk, I put forth a shoot/stalk" (LSJ s.v.: web address 1) appears twice in [Aristotle], Problemata 924b, and 11 times in Theophrastus (6 in Enquiry into Plants, 5 in On The Causes of Plants). See further, next note.
[3] The perfect active participle of e)kkaule/w is attested only in lexicographers (Pollux, Apollonius, Apion, Hesychius), and the passage cited is Suda's own, in omicron 598, glossing o)/rmena. The gloss may be derived from Pollux 6.54.4: kai\ pa=n de\ to\ u(perechnqhko/s, o(/per e)kkekaulhko\s, o)/rmenon w)no/mazon "and anything over-blooming --- which they call 'having put out a shoot', they used to call o)/rmenon".
