Κατώγειος first appears in Herodian the grammarian (not as a hypothetical form: De prosodia catholica vol. 3.1, p. 191), and Porphyry (De antro nympharum 8.16); it is the form that has survived into Modern Greek (κατώγι, κατώι ). Ἀνώγειος does not appear before Eustathius (Commentary on the Iliad vol.2 p.301); it has likewise survived into Modern Greek (ἀνώγι, ἀνώι ).
